The Experience

We ventured out from the warmth of our offices, through wind and rain for lunch at Cafe de KIKAKU.

Soft shelled crab bao

Having seen a rather impressive looking photo on urbanspoon, I ordered the soft shelled crab bao; deep fried soft shelled crab sandwiched between a piece of bao with a side of potato gems and salad. The soft shelled crab was crispy, but I was dismayed to find that it was mushy and bit watery in the middle. The bao was light and fluffy. It was also very sweet. The potato gems were super crunchy on the outside and perfect on the inside. I also enjoyed the sweet and sour dressing they used on the salad. The salad was a light and welcome refreshing break from all that fried food. I thought that everything combined was a little odd and heavy on the fried side.

My high expectations for the soft shelled crab bao has left me feeling let down, my colleagues had enjoyed their tasty meals (smelt amazing too). I look forward to returning and trying out other items on their menu.
