I’ve walked past CJ Lunch Bar before, but I never took any initiative to visit. Recently it was recommended to JT by a friend, so we took the plunge to visit.
Address: Shop 2/ 391 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000
Monday - Friday: 10.30am - 8.30pm
CJ Lunch Bar is a tiny place, with only a handful of tables indoors and a couple of tables outdoors. Initially, we were going to sit outside where it wasn’t as cramped or stuffy, but the icy-cold winds of Melbourne changed our minds and we were lucky to find a table inside.
Looking around us, it didn’t take long to identify the popular dishes. On each table, there was a dish of either the Chicken cheese bulgogi or the fried chicken. Seeing that the serving sizes were quite generous JT and I decided that we weren’t hungry enough to tackle two mains, so we ordered the Chicken cheese bulgogi and a small serving of kimchi pancake.
The chicken cheese bulgogi was chili, cheesy and delicious! I’m one of those that love spicy food, but I can’t seem to handle more than a few bites before I break down in tears and start blowing my nose. So, I was really grateful for all that cheese which helped numb down a bit of the spiciness of the dish. The serving of the chicken and cheese bulgogi was quite generous in size, perhaps enough to share between four or so people. JT and I were unable to finish, and ended up taking doggy bagging half of it home. The couple next to us had ordered the same dish and they did the same thing.
CJ Lunch Bar is now definitely on the top of my go-to list for Korean on a weekday; flavoursome food, friendly service and value for money - it really is going to be hard to resist revisiting for another serving of chicken and cheese bulgogi.
